Being realistic is so old school

If there is anything I kept hearing in my life on and on that that would be: you need to be realistic, both feet on the ground, stop living in the clouds. Especially when you work in scientific field where the surrounding loves to operate on the level of pure and strong facts, which by the way is great when you are active in this field however it doesn't lead to general growth in all areas of your life.

Anyway, I am focusing here on personal growth and development, and in this area I can tell you for sure that being realistic is soo old school, we need to get over this paradigm. Your probably red so many times: people need to set realistic and attainable goals. I couldn't disagree more. We need to dream big and set bold goals. Realistic means someone else's reality of me. I can give you even more definitions that I've found: Realism is nothing more that a socially acceptable form of pessimism. The people with most consistent track record of success don't think of terms what is. They think in terms of what could be. Dr. John Eliot (btw. professor at Standford) said that realistic people do not accomplish extraordinary things because the odds of success scares them. The best performers ignore the odds, they ignore what is.

Our goals need to scare us a bit and excite a lot. Otherwise you will never be challenged enough to grow to your fullest potential. Also, be ok with not attaining them all, that is not the point. You should only be achieving 70-80% of your goals, otherwise you are playing small. I might be repeating myself, but the point is not to ultimately achieve those goals, the main point is who you become as person, what kind of version of yourself are you becoming, what kind of skills are you gaining. When you put things into this perspective, you allow yourself to be bold with your goals because you know they will challenge you to live your life to the fullest potential.
